Registration for Copernicus Environmental Solution Hackathon is open!

Green and Smart Technology Cluster invites every hackathon enthusiast to apply for Copernicus Hackathon, which will be held in Liepaja this year! Hackathon will take place from 7 to 9 June in the cozy rooms of Coworking Liepaja and will last 48 hours! During the event, the teams created by the participants will compete with each other to find solutions to various challenges using Copernicus satellite data! Winners of the first three places will be awarded with big cash prizes!

How will team building and the preparation process happen?

We start on Friday evening at 16:30 and we invite all participants to arrive on time to be able to sign up and get acquainted with the other participants and mentors. Event program available here!

You can register yourself and your existing team for the event, but do not worry if you have not yet found team members, during the event you will be able to join an existing team that will be useful for your skills and knowledge.

If you are at least 18 years old student, researcher, entrepreneur or just a professional in your field, and you have the skills in one of the following areas – website development, programming, graphic design, data processing and research, marketing, business, finance, project management, electronics or in other equivalent areas – then we are waiting for you!

We will provide you with access to Copernicus data, as well as space and infrastructure to create innovative solutions, but we expect you to take your laptop, phone, all the chargers you need so that your work process does not stop.

Here, in Coworking Liepaja premises, we will provide you with a place to relax and gather your thoughts, but take your sleeping bag, pillow and shower accessories with you so you can rest better.

Together we will create a unique atmosphere for a creative work process!

What will be the challenges?

During the hackathon, we will focus on three major areas – land monitoring, climate change and sea monitoring.
In order to slightly limit the flight of your thoughts, we have raised five topics:

  • Territory monitoring (Determination of the threat of flooding);
  • Energy efficiency (determination of heat loss in objects, object monitoring);
  • Clean mobility (traffic intensity monitoring, reduction of emissions);
  • Showing the impacts of climate change to the public;
  • Land cover change trends in Latvia;
  • The challenges of local self-government that we will discover during the event!
  • However, we have also anticipated that any of the participants could apply for their own challenges, so don’t worry about it, we will give you the time you need to present your idea and select strong team members to help you bring this idea into a ready solution .

Available prize pool

In order to make this hackathon more exciting, the Green-Tech Cluster, together with partners, will provide the following prize pool:

Some tips for preparing the presentation

You’ll need to present your idea within 2 minutes, so be concise. Prepare a 2-3 slide presentation with the following key points:

  1. Name of the idea;
  2. A small description of your idea- what problem will your idea solve? Why should this problem be solved, what impact does it have on the environment? Who will be the end users of your idea / solution?
  3. The technical solution of the idea, how do you plan to realize this idea?
  4. What are you currently looking for? Mentor tips, teammates with certain skills, etc.

How to prepare for the hackathon?

Even if you have not had the experience of using Copernicus data for now, until the start of the hackathon you will be fully prepared if you visit one of our warm-up events during which our experts will show you where, how and what data you can get and use during the hackathon. During these events, you will have a great opportunity to get to know your potential teammates and mentors, whom you can turn to during the hatchback!

The first warm-up seminar will take place on May 21 in Ventspils, at the premises of Ventspils University College(Inženieru street 101A, Ventspils, LV-3601). Event program available here!
