Green Tech Copernicus hackathon will take place in Liepaja and this time you can also participate remotely from anywhere in the world!

The Green Tech Copernicus Hackathon is a 48 hour challenge where you not only gain new skills and knowledge but also make new friends and meet awesome mentors. Together with your teammates and mentor support, you will be able to find a best solution to solve one of our challenges or even develop your own innovative solution, which will be presented to the jury at the end of the event. There is only one rule – you need to use Copernicus satellite data. Green Tech Copernicus Hackathon is a perfect place where you can test out crazy ideas!

If you are at least 18 years old enthusiastic student and you have marketing, programming, graphic design, data processing, business, project management or other relevant skills then we are waiting for you!

Together with our partners, we have set up an amazing prize pool

You still have doubts?

If you still have doubts about whether this hackathon is for you, we can reassure you –

NO PRIOR KNOWLEDGE ABOUT COPERNICUS SATELLITE DATA IS REQUIRED TO PARTICIPATE IN THE HACKATHON. WE WILL TEACH YOU EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW! AND, IF YOU DON’T HAVE A TEAM YET, BE CALM – ON THE FIRST DAY OF HACKATHON WE WILL HELP YOU TO FIND A PERFECT TEAM READY TO WORK TOGETHER.

During the hackathon you will receive the support and friendly advice of our experienced mentors.

We will provide you with access to Copernicus data, as well as space and infrastructure to create innovative solutions, but we expect you to take your laptop, phone, all the chargers you need so that your work process does not stop.

Here, in Liepaja University premises, we will provide you with a place to relax and gather your thoughts, but take your sleeping bag, pillow and shower accessories with you.

Together we will create a unique atmosphere for a creative work process!

Challenges of the hackathon

How to prepare for the hackathon?

Even if you have no experience with Copernicus data at the moment, you will be fully prepared for the hackathon by participating in our webinars, where our experts will show you where, how and what data you can get and use during the hackathon.

Webinar #1
  • Webinar 1: Introduction in remote sensing (Speaker Edgars Visockis)

    • Conception of multispectral, radar and lidar data.
    • Four resolutions of multispectral data (temporal, spatial, spectral and radiometric).
    • What is Copernicus and what data products Copernicus provide?
    • Data formats: raster data and vector data. In what formats Copernicus data are provided?
    • Where to get data? Practical demonstration
    • Practical example
Vebinārs #2
  • Webinar 2:Practical introduction in deep learning (Speaker Linda Gulbe)

    • What is machine learning? What is deep learning? What tasks can be performed by convolutional neural networks?
    • What data are required and how data should be prepared?
    • How a single perception works?
    • Basic principles of the convolutional neural networks?
    • Practical demonstration using Google Colab and keras Python library for application of convolutional neural networks.
  • Webinar 3: Case studies in remote sensing (Speakers Linda Gulbe, Edgars Visockis)

    • Review of practical application of remote sensing data from VIRAC Remote Sensing Department experience and remote sensing related projects. During the webinar at least 8 examples will be shown in a structure:
      1) environmental or monitoring problem to be solved,
      2) what remote sensing and reference
data are required to solve this problem,
      3) what computer methods can solve remote sensing data processing for this problem.
